Overcome Weight-Loss Barriers

It’s January 1st, and it is time to start your New Year’s resolution of exercising and eating healthy. You get a gym membership, or a work out program and you go at it. The first few days are hard, but you start seeing a difference in energy and the workouts are getting a little easier. It has been a few weeks, and you are seeing weight loss results on the scale, which get you excited! The next week comes and you don’t see any number changes, which is a little discouraging, but you keep at it. You work hard through-out the week, and see no results again. Now you are frustrated and discouraged and slowly start eating worse and your workouts go from day to day, to once or twice a week, to no workouts at all.

Does this sound familiar? It does to me! I know this scenario all to well. You see results from the hard work, then you hit a plateau. It is one of the top reasons why people give up. Why keep working hard to see no results? It is a valid question, but giving up is too easy.

During the first weeks of weight loss, it is normal to see a big drop. Why? When you start your journey, the first thing that happens is you eat fewer calories (calories = energy) per day, which forces your body to get it’s stored energy from glycogen, which is a carbohydrate found in muscle. Glycogen holds onto water, so when it is burned for energy, it also releases water, resulting in big weight loss that’s mostly water. This process usually happens within the first weeks, which means the big numbers you see on the scale are partially due to water loss. That is one reason why you may stop seeing big numbers.

When your body breaks down muscle for energy, a plateau then happens because your metabolism slows as you lose muscle. (WebMd says metabolism is the process of breaking down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats to yield the energy your body needs to maintain itself. The rate of your metabolism depends on the interaction between the number of calories you consume, the number of calories you burn while eating and exercising, and the calories you burn based on your individual genetic makeup.) As your metabolism slows, you burn fewer calories than you use to.

  The WHY is important, but figuring out WHAT needs to happen to get past the barrier is key.

  To push past your barrier, you need to increase activity or decrease the calories you eat. That’s it. That can be decreasing your calories (as long as it is not below 1200) by 200-400 or increase your workout by 15-30 minutes. It may take some trial and error, but make sure to track the exercises and time and what you eat, so you can figure out what works and what doesn’t. A great tool for that is: MyFitness Pal. It is free, and great at tracking your daily exercise and food intake.

Shish Kabobs

One of my favorites is Shish Kabobs. It is very customizable to the diet you are on. It is also easy to create multiple meals for the week.

What you need:

(2) Chicken Breast
(2) Steak
(1) Marinade
(1) Pineapple
(1) Veggies (Onions, Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, etc)

1. Marinate Chicken and Steak and let it sit refrigerated for 2 hours. (Low-Fat Italian dressing for the chicken and salt and pepper used for the steak)
2. If you are using wooden sticks, let those soak in water for around 1 hour.
3. Cut the chicken, steak, and veggies into small pieces. I used pineapple and onions, which give it a great flavor while cooking.
4. Put the meat and veggies on the stick. If you are strategic with it, you can put the onions and pineapple next to the meat to season it.

Grill them at a medium heat until the chicken is around 165 degrees.

Berry Shakeology Pancakes

Egg Whites: 1 Cup
Dry Oatmeal: 1/2 Cup
Tropical Shakeology: 1/2 – 1 Scoop
Vanilla Protein (Optional)
Strawberries or Blueberries

Put the egg whites, oatmeal, Shakeology, Protein, and berry/berries into a food processor (I use a Magic Bullet) and blend. The consistency should be thick. Heat a pan to medium heat. Spray pan with non-stick spray. Pour the batter into the pan and make whatever size pancake you want. Cover the pan and wait a few minutes until the top of the pancake starts to get bubbles, then flip it over. *If the pan is too hot, you will burn the pancake. Once finished, you can put fresh berries on top.

Low Carb Omelet

This is one of my favorite breakfast meals. I am on the go in the mornings, so I am always looking for a fast, easy, and healthy breakfast. It is great for low-carb diets!

1/2 Cup – Egg Whites
2-3 OZ – Chopped Chicken Breast
1 Cup – Spinach
Salt and Pepper

Put a pan on medium/high heat. Put the egg whites, chicken and spinach in the pan. Season it with salt and pepper. After a few minutes fold the omelet over.

Cover the pan for 2 to 3 minutes, and the omelet will be finished! You can also put hot sauce, tomatoes, or salsa on top to finish it off. Enjoy!

GUIDE TO QUICK WEIGHT LOSS

We live in a “Quick Fix” world. Time is precious, and we are always on the run. Sometimes working out doesn’t get prioritized as high as we want it to. We are looking for that quick fix to loose weight and be healthy. Unfortunately, there is no healthy way to loose weight quickly!..BUT there are few things I recommend for anyone looking to loose weight, and gain energy!

1. Drink Water Instead of Soda – Making that switch can not only gain you more energy, but you can loose weight from making the switch! Soda = Calories and a lot of sugar! I recommend at least 80 Ounces of water a day.

2. Count Your Calories – It is important to know what you are eating! Don’t let restaurants trick you with salads and special sandwiches. You need to know the nutritional facts before you eat it! I have found that some salads can be loaded with calories, fat, and sodium…some worse then a Big Mac and large fry at McDonalds! I recommend using http://myfitnesspal.com

3. Shakeology – I don’t endorse something, unless I am a firm believer of it! I think the product needs to sell itself…and that is the case with Shakeology. It is a great meal replacement shake that is ALL NATURAL! You will loose weight, gain clarity, gain energy, etc. I have done my research, and this is the best of the best! Some of you are reading the title of this post, and thinking, “Thanks for stating the obvious!” Even though that may be the case, I think a lot of people go through every day expecting results, and wanting them NOW! Living in this fast-pace world, we live a life demanding results, and wanting them to come to us with little or no work.

The same goes with fitness. We want to put in 30 minutes at the gym, but then we go home and eat a pizza and sit on the couch for the rest of the day. I am a PRIME example of that! Early this year, I started to work out with some friends. Once I was done, I would go home and eat a bunch of crap. I wasn’t seeing results and I was getting upset! I honestly didn’t want to blame my eating and drinking 4 large things of Dr. Pepper a day. I wanted to see the results, and wanted to see them NOW! After a few weeks of not really seeing results, I stopped working out and kept my lifestyle of horrible eating. I wasn’t committed to getting myself in shape.

A few months ago, I saw some pictures of myself, and couldn’t believe I let myself go that much. That was the igniter to the fuel!
